Kṛṣṇa-lilā-stava
Kṛṣṇa-lilā-stava is a book of prayers written by Sanatana Gosvami as a summary of Lord Krishna’s pastimes in Vrindavan and Mathura. It also includes prayers offered to other aspects of the Lord in which, Santana affirms, the Lord mercifully makes himself accessible. Sanatana Gosvami has arranged the main body of the book in the form of vivid and colorful pastime pictures, well suited for the relishing of Lord Krishna’s sweetness. Kṛṣṇa-lilā-stava serving as a guidebook for offering both prayers and obeisances ,helps Krishna’s devotee follow Lord Krishna’s most essential instruction, stated twice in Bhagavad-gita(9.34,18.65):
man-mana bhava mad-bhakto
mad-yaji mam namaskuru
“Always think of Me, become My devotee, worship Me, and offer your homage unto Me”
In this book Srila Sanatana summarizes half of the Bhagavatam’ s Tenth Canto—-the first forty-five chapters—narrating Krishna’s early pastimes, up to His entering Mathura and killing kansa. The longest chapter summary is twenty verses long, the shortest only two verses, the average close to nine.This book will appeal to serve types of reader: the practicing devotee of Lord Krishna, the spiritually interested soul seeking hand practical insight into a vibrant and living spiritual tradition, and also the scholar who wishes to investigate to the literature of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. The verses of this book gives us a transcendental taste of Lord Krishna’s vrindavan pastimes.Srila Prabhupada mentions Kṛṣṇa-lilā-stava in his purport to Caitanya-caritamrta, Antya–lila 4.222. This edition is especially praiseworthy because it gives a scholarly but easily understandable translation of the Sanskrit text, interspersed with helpful and sensitive commentaries.At the end of the book Sanatana Gosvami offers the reader a wonderful benediction:
etal-lila-stavam nāma
stotram śri-kṛṣṇa tārakam
Praṇāmāṣṭottara-sate
yo ‘rthāvagama-pūrvakam
kirtayet so ‘cirad bhakto
labhatam kṛpaya tava
rūpe namani lilāyām
akride ‘pi parām ratim
“, “O Śrī Kṛṣṇa,any devotee who chants these prayers, known as Your lilā-stava, understanding their meaning, and offer 108 obeisances, will by Your mercy quickly attain divine attraction to Your beautiful form, names and pastimes and the place where You enjoy.”(Kṛṣṇa-lilā-stava 431–432)
This book is an authentic spiritual work that has inspired Gaudiya vaishnavas for centuries. Able to touch both heart and mind, it steps forward from a living tradition to bear witness to the workings of the spirit.Among the priceless books contributed by Srila Sanatana Goswami to the literary heritage of Gaudiya Vaishnavas, his Kṛṣṇa-lilā-stava is the shortest and the simplest. An offering of praise in 432 verses, it gives a personal meditation on Kṛṣṇa’s Vrindavan pastimes
