The truth is not the same! Apparently, the decline of most civilisations is due to the soil erosion and degradation. The common sense is very uncommon, we live in a world where we only follow the footsteps of the predecessors, who were not so genius in the maintenance of the land. 

Once the soil is degraded, it takes more than a humans lifespan to get back its fertility, original stage. Approximately more than 400 years are taken for each and every soil centimetre to become fertile again. For us it just takes a couple of decades to degrade it completely.
