PAURANIC CARITAVALI
Puranas are part of vedic literature and the goal of vedic literature is to attract us to serve God. Purana narrates the history of persons living a vedic life linking the implication of the philosophical teachings with factual histories in a way as to give an approach to the vedic teachings to all sectors of humanity. The puranas largely contain anecdotes of pious divine sages and kings. By hearing stories of their lives, affectionate readers can deepen their appreciation of the absolute. We get advice on what it means to live a pious god centered life. Thus we have narrations of powerful sages like Agastya rishi who swallowed up the entire ocean to break the pride of the Ocean God, Vishwamitri rishi, Angira rishi who was reborn as the spiritual master of demigods, Mandavya muni who had access to hell with his present body to encounter yamraj, Atri rishi father of Lord Dattatreya, Bhrigu muni, Rishi Durvasa, kardama muni who had all mystic powers, rishi kashyap, Vasistha muni, Vedavyasa who wrote and compiled Srimad bhagavatam and mahabharata and many more.
The predictions and glories of these Rishi munis are celebrated even today as they are direct representatives of the Supreme Lord which is mentioned in Puranas. Their predictions are not on mundane platforms and remain an eternal truth. Today’s modern education which is not based on vedic literature is temporary. Even scientists change their view over and again for their knowledge is based on their speculative mental concoction and they feel pride about such material education which is not centered on God. The knowledge is not based on humanitarianism or teaches how to perfect our human lives and what are the goals of this human life. Their civilization is based on modern technology and science which is godless. In Spite of material opulences based on modern technology and bodily comforts people are frustrated and not happy. They are highly discontented in their personal lives too although it doesn’t reflect externally. The puranic records are Apaurusheya which are not written by ordinary men of this mundane world and are derived from something beyond human experience. The histories of puranas describe the characteristics of the Supreme lord and His incarnations and how to attain the spiritual world. Thus puranas teaches values, ethics, principles to live an ideal life which is very essential in our human behavior. The constitutional position of the soul is to love God and through puranas we can learn the dealings how to reciprocate with God and serve Him through various examples and teachings of the saintly people.
