A japa counter, also known as a mala, is a traditional tool used in various spiritual practices, particularly in Hinduism and Buddhism. It consists of a string of beads, usually made from materials such as wood, seeds, or gemstones, with a larger bead called the guru bead or sumeru bead. Practitioners use the japa counter to keep track of the repetition of a mantra, prayer, or divine name during meditation or devotional practices. Each repetition of the mantra or prayer is counted by sliding a bead along the string, starting from one side and moving towards the guru bead. The japa counter serves as a physical aid to focus the mind and deepen one’s spiritual connection during the practice.
