ISKCON VRINDAVAN MART

This Krishna Consciousness Movement

The Bhagavad Gita was spoken on a battlefield. Before the battle, Arjuna declined to fight with his kinsmen. After the Bhagavad Gita was spoken, he changed his mind and fought. There was not much time for this discussion- one hour at the most-for the opposing armies were already lined up and eager to begin the combat.
Different people hold different perceptions about this historic event according to their level of understanding. Some take it as a fantasy, while others try to contemplate what was right and wrong, but few understand the event's true essence.
If one tries to know Bhagavad Gita as it is, it can help him discern reality from illusion, spirit from matter and eternal from temporary.
True happiness is eternal in nature. But in today’s time, we find it very hard to remain happy even for a few moments. This is because we are mistaking pleasure for happiness. The sources of pleasure come from the outside, whereas happiness can only happen from within.

The Bhagavad Gita is a constructive science that helps us turn inwards. This human body and mind work as a machine. How can one operate a machine wisely without reading its user's manual? The Bhagavad Gita is the user's manual for human beings to function wisely in this world. But what is the purpose of functioning wisely, you may ask? One is that you lead a frictionless life, that is rid of stress, anxiety and disengagement. But the primary reason is to go back to the godhead. This may not resonate with you right away, but as one progresses in the journey of purifying one’s consciousness, one slowly starts to realise the faults in material nature and it becomes obvious to such a person that he is not the body and the spirit belongs to a better place.
A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) said “Books are the basis; purity is the force; preaching is the essence; utility is the principle.”
So one must possess a purified consciousness to imbibe the Bhagwad Gita's teachings. One must also preach this knowledge to establish oneself in it and use it to liberate from material bondage.
The Krishna consciousness movement was initiated to assist people in following these instructions in the modern age. In a nutshell, the Krishna consciousness movement provides the seekers of truth with the tools for eternal bliss such as the Prabhupada's books, devotee association and most blissful practise of chanting the holy name of the lord- the Maha-mantra- “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare. Hare Rama, hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare.

The objective of the Krishna Consciousness Movement:
We face similar situations as Arjuna did on the battlefield. Even though the magnitude of the problem may be much lesser, we feel anxious and depressed from time to time. There is no doubt that we are equally in need of guidance and support as was Arjuna. In times such as these, it is highly difficult to do anything that requires the sacrifice of time, money or energy. Nor do people have the inner strength to pursue hard-core meditative practices.
So  A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada came up with a brilliant solution in the form of the Krishna consciousness movement which is not only the purest form of yoga (inclusiveness) but also the easiest solution possible.
In the Krishna consciousness movement, there are four things that are needed to be renounced: illicit sex, intoxication, gambling, and meat eating. These 4 activities agitate the mind and discomfort the body. Along with this one is recommended to chant the holy name of the lord, especially the Maha-mantra, keep the association of pure devotees and eat properly cooked food offered to Krishna.
At one level the objective is to make the mind and body conducive for the purification process to take place which is essential to living a resistance-free life.
But at a higher stage, one realises that his objective is to access the ocean of bliss lying within himself in the form of Krishna’s love.
