Dharma The Way Of Transcendence
DHARMA guides us back to our true nature, our original position as loving servants of Lord Sri Krishna. Another meaning of dharma is “duty”. But duty to whom, and for what? We can answer these questions only by understanding the other part of dharma, our essential characteristic. In this book His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedant Swami Prabhupada takes us to the very heart of dharma, exploring its meaning. There is nothing more important than understanding our dharma. This book thus stands as an enduring literary landmark for humanity as we move forward towards the new challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. The root meaning of dharma is “that which sustains one’s existence’. A living being’s sustenance of existence is to coordinate his activities with his eternal relationship with the supreme lord, Sri krishna. The highest dharma is rendering loving service to God, Sri Krishna.
When the word Dharma is taken to mean “religion” we can understand from this verse of the Srimad Bhagavatam (SB 1.2.6) that rendering transcendental loving service to the Lord Sri Krishna is the highest form of religion. The Supreme dharma of the soul is bhakti, devotional service to the supreme Lord. That is the dharma of the soul. Generally people understand dharma in the terms of pious and impious activities, but here in Bhagavatam(SB 1.2.9) says, “dharmasya hy apavargyasya nartho rthayopakalpate”. ‘Dharma should be executed not for material benefit but to nullify the miseries of material existence. So this book presents the practice of first class dharma to become peaceful and satisfied.
Dharma The Way Of Transcendence answers essential questions thoughtful people ask in every millennium : Who am I? What are my deepest needs? How can I fulfill them? Therefore any religion without a scientific, philosophical understanding of God is simply sentiment. It is not religion. And philosophy without religion is simply mental speculation.
