Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is Vyasdeva’s commentary on his own Vedanta-sutras. It was written in the maturity of his spiritual life under the direction of Narad muni ,his spiritual master. After compiling the Bhāgavatam,Vyasa imparted the synopsis of it to his son, the sage Sukadeva Gosvami. Sukadeva Gosvami subsequently recited the entire Bhagvatam to Maharaja Parikshit in an assembly of learned saints on the Bank of the Ganges at Hastinapur.Maharaja Parikshit was the emperor of the world and was a great saintly king. Having received a warning that he would die within a week, he renounced his entire kingdom and retired from the bank of Ganges to fast until death and receive spiritual enlightenment. The Bhāgavatam begins with Emperor Parikshit’s sober inquiry to Sukadeva Gosvami.Sukadeva Gosvami’s answer to this question, and numerous other question posed by Maharaja Parikshit, concerning everything from the nature of the self to the origin of the Universe, held the assembled sages in raped attention continously for seven days leading up to the king’s death and king attained the lotus feet of the Lord.
Bhagvatam offers simple and practical guidance for attainment of the highest self-knowledge and realization of the Absolute Truth. The perfect personality is addressed in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam as Vasudeva ,or one who lives everywhere in full consciousness and in full possession of His complete energy. All of these is completely explained in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and the reader has ample opportunity to study this critically.
